Excerpt
“We're not interested in where you attended undergraduate school or received your medical training. That, along with where you did your internship, residency, and fellowship are all a matter of public record. What we need to know is why your personal life is such a public mess. Also, I'm not going to mislead you and say we don't need details; that your private life is your own business. Because that's not true, we want all the salacious details so we can figure out what the police will assign as the means, motive, and opportunity. Because believe me, a jury will convict you just as easily on circumstantial evidence as direct,” she said pointing her finger at him.
He looked over at me as if he could see right through my clothes. I returned the stare.
“Yes, my behavior can be bad. I tire of things quickly and am easily bored,” Dr. Blackwell offered.
“So, are you stating that you have had, shall we say several extramarital relationships?” Dalia asked.
“Yes.”
“Was Marsha Anderson one of the women we could add to that category?”
“Yes.”
“Ongoing or over?” Dalia asked, waiting to record his response.
He looked at me, glanced down at my crossed legs and lingered there too long. If he was trying to throw me off my game, he had the wrong person. Many a morning I'd sit in the jail where a room full of men were meeting with their lawyers and had to deflect lascivious looks and catcalls.
“That is a question I can answer in the affirmative. It is over,” Dr. Blackwell stated with an emphasis on the last word.
“Why are you so sure?” Dalia asked.
“Because she's dead,” he said. He raised an eyebrow and shrugged.
Pretty damn cold and detached bastard. I can't imagine Dr. Blackwell would be much of a giving lover. Hmm. But he sure was good to look at.
“If she wasn't dead, would the affair have continued?” Dalia inquired with a note of irritation.  I could tell she didn't appreciate the word games he was playing.
“The affair? Not Likely. I was ready to move on,” he answered with a tone of boredom. “Now, ladies, to quote your investigator, let's cut to the chase. I didn't kill Marsha, and therefore I don't fear sitting through another police interview. Can they assassinate my character? Yes. Might it be relevant in a trial? I don't see how as I've had dozens of affairs and none wound up dead. So, what's my motive?” he asked engaging me with the question.
