The Muse by Arjay Lewis - Book Review

 Synopsis
Famed novelist Jack Court has a secret: the wealthy writer is a serial killer. He has another hidden treasure, a small antediluvian creature that dwells within his body and gives him youth, strength and a superhuman ability to avoid capture. On his trail is Sheriff Neil Trajan, who is certain Court murdered his wife three years earlier.
When the author is hit by a careless driver, the creature leaves him and through a series of events, ends up with lowly writer, Harold Godwine. Godwine begins to write faster and better, but is troubled by dreams of blood.
However, Jack is healing and devolving into something not quite human. As Court seeks the young author, he leaves a trail of destruction, pursued by Trajan and his FBI associate, Bill Morris.
Will Jack Court do anything to retrieve the companion that inspires his dark desires?

My Review
The Muse is one of those books that both horrifies you and intrigues you. It's horror, but at the same time, it's more than that. It's suspenseful, thrilling, and even has a very tiny dash of romance added in for good measure.
The story has a mish-mash of characters, but the main one is Jack Court, a famous horror author hiding a horrible secret…or ten. You see, Jack’s ability to write horror isn’t because he’s just a good author. Oh no, he’s got himself a muse. But his muse is so much more than that. It’s…well, you’ll have to read it and find out.
Another main character is Neil Trajan, the sheriff of a small town in Maine. His wife was murdered, and he just knows that Jack Court had something to do with it, but he can’t prove it. But when Jack Court is hit by a car, things begin spiraling out of control, and that one little event sets off a chain of events that become crazier and crazier as the book goes on.
I don’t want to spoil anything, so I won’t mention any of the other characters or anything else that might give too much away, but just know that if you’re a fan of horror, you’ll want to read this book ASAP. It’s so good!
Plot-wise, I found myself immediately hooked within the first few pages, and I couldn’t wait to find out what was going to happen next. While real life did get in the way a bit and kept me from finishing as quickly as I’d have liked, I did finish, and boy, oh boy, was that ending a doozy. I loved it!
Character wise, I really enjoyed all of them. Most of them are good, likeable characters you’ll be rooting for, and then there’s Jack, who’s…different. Let’s just leave it at that.
The Muse will hold readers rapt with attention and have them eager to see how everything plays out. It’s definitely a thrill ride, and if you don’t find yourself gasping or fearfully flipping through the pages at any point in time, then…well, I don’t know what to tell you.
I’m giving The Muse a well-deserved 4.5 stars. Highly recommend!
