Over Raging Tides
Jennifer Ellision
(Lady Pirates, #1)
Publication date: March 20th 2018
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult
The pirate crew of the Lady Luck lives by many rules, but chief among them is this: they do not allow men on board.
That’s a rule that quartermaster Grace Porter is willing to break when a shipwrecked young nobleman offers her information of an omniscient map, stolen from his warship by an enemy vessel. Until now, the map was only the stuff of legend… but with its help, Grace may finally be able to hunt down the Mordgris, the sea monsters who stole her mother away from her.
Unfortunately, some members of her crew have other plans…
To find the map and face the Mordgris, Grace will have to confront her past, put the Luck between warring nations, and uncover treachery aboard the ship. And ultimately, her revenge and the destruction of the Mordgris will come at a hefty price: the betrayal of her crew.
Grace promised them they wouldn’t regret this.
She just isn’t sure that she won’t.

 Guest post
“What would you do if you were to live the life of a pirate?”

I wake up when the sea decides to remind us that we sail upon her waves only because she permits it. The ship bucks and I’m tossed from my hammock in the crew’s quarters, landing hard. I groan when I hit the unforgiving planks of the ship. I’d worked under the Sailing Master yesterday and spent a long time hauling ropes to and fro at her command. Even after my ration of grog and a meal in me, I’d gone to bed with my body aching.

Today doesn’t promise to be any better.  I’d thought that I’d managed to keep my muttered comments beneath my breath, but I should have kept them to myself for they’d caught the Sailing Master’s ear. I’d earned myself a day swabbing the deck for my trouble.

But at least I no longer wake in the middle of the night, seized by seasickness. It had taken me a great deal of time to find my sea legs.

A glance around confirms that I’m the only one to have been freed from her hammock. While many swing wildly about and grumbles sweep the crew, everyone else has managed to keep her place. I’m just about to climb back in when the night look-out enters. I barely suppress a groan. That means it’s shift change.

On the bright side, perhaps, if I get started quickly, I can clean more of the deck before the sun is its highest in the sky.

I regret mouthing off yesterday. I don’t want to be on the Sailing Master’s bad side. I want to learn from her. All of her charts, calculations… the stars and the shiny, shiny compasses… I rather fancy becoming Sailing Master myself one day. And to get voted into the position, I need the crew to know that I have both the knowledge and dedication for the position. Until then, I’m just an average sailor.

Before the others can wake up, I’m through the door, heading to the mess. I’ll snatch a quick meal. A biscuit… maybe a piece of fruit if there’s any left that’s not rotten. Then I’ll get myself a bucket and swab and get to work proving myself to the crew.
